Southwest Airlines is preparing to open its first airport lounges as part of a larger initiative to expand its premium travel offering and strengthen its Rapid Rewards loyalty programme. The airline announced that the first lounges will be located at four major airports. These facilities are expected to be operational by the end of 2027.

Four Airports Confirmed for Southwest Lounges

The first Southwest Airlines lounges will be located at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), and Nashville International Airport (BNA).

Construction has already begun, but the airline has not yet announced specific opening dates or which airport will be the first to open.

In addition, Southwest Airlines plans to introduce lounge services at at least seven other airports in the coming years. These future destinations will focus on markets with strong demand for business and leisure travellers.

According to the airline, each lounge will incorporate locally inspired dining and design, while featuring high-quality amenities and Southwest Airlines’ customer service. The facility will be developed in collaboration with Chase and draw on its experience operating the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network.

How Can Passengers Access the Lounges?

One confirmed way to access the lounges is through the new Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premium Card issued by Chase. The card is scheduled to launch in 2027.

Southwest Airlines has not yet announced whether passengers can also access through elite status, lounge membership or one-time passes. Therefore, more details on access rules, guest benefits, and the amenities of each lounge may be released gradually before the opening.

For frequent Southwest Airlines passengers, these lounges are expected to add value before departure, especially at airports with a high density of Southwest Airlines flights. However, the ultimate practicality of this network will depend on its coverage area, eligibility requirements, and the annual fee cost of the new card.

A Significant Change for Southwest

This news marks a significant change in Southwest Airlines’ traditional business model. The company has begun to introduce more products to provide passengers with a wider range of services. The addition of airport lounges brings Southwest Airlines closer to the high-end travel experiences offered by many major competitors in the United States.

At the same time, launching services at only four airports means its network size is still much smaller than that of long-term operators of lounge networks. Southwest Airlines’ commitment to adding at least seven more locations indicates its plan to expand this concept to a broader scale.

For passengers, the opening of the first lounges will still take more than a year. However, this announcement has initially shown how Southwest Airlines hopes to reshape its air and airport travel experience.
