Passengers landing at the East Midlands Airport (EMA), U.K., are being greeted with a warmer welcome after a series of improvements to the arrivals process. The airport has refreshed its immigration hall, where travellers undergo passport checks, introducing new wood panelling that aligns with upgrades across the wider terminal.

Immigration Hall Revamp and Clearer Wayfinding

Large images of regional landmarks and prominent welcome signage have been installed, aiming to enhance the sense of place for inbound passengers.

A key focus of the refurbishment has been improving passenger flow. EMA has introduced colour-coded archways to direct travellers to the appropriate passport control area, alongside new queue barriers and clearer overhead signage.

Airport officials said the changes were designed to reduce confusion and create a smoother transition through border control, particularly during peak arrival periods.

Once through immigration, passengers will notice further updates in the baggage reclaim hall, including refreshed decor and improved signage. The airport has also highlighted its recently completed facilities, including upgraded toilets and a Changing Places facility introduced last year to support travellers with additional accessibility needs.

Upgrades Continue Beyond Border Control

Improvements extend into the arrivals hall, where a new Lost Property Hub has opened to streamline enquiries. The Short Stay 1 car park has also been resurfaced and fitted with clearer signage to assist drivers collecting passengers.

Retail changes are underway as well. WHSmith in the arrivals hall is undergoing a refit, while a wider refurbishment of toilet facilities across the terminal is progressing. Facilities in the check-in hall are nearing completion, with further upgrades scheduled in the coming months.

Summer Enhancements in the Departure Lounge

Looking ahead to the busy summer season, EMA is investing heavily in its departure lounge. Plans include new retail outlets, refurbished eateries, a Quiet Room and sensory pod, and a Little Flyers play area for younger passengers.

Customer service and planning director Mike Grimes said the arrivals upgrades were introduced in response to passenger feedback.

“I’m pleased that in response to customer feedback we have enhanced our arrivals experience. For those heading out, there are huge changes underway in the departure lounge which will make a big difference from Easter onwards,” he said.
