Codeshare with British Airways

With the new expanded codeshare agreement, Finnair will be adding its code to seven new British Airways’ domestic routes. Finnair will add its code to British Airways flights between London Heathrow and Aberdeen, Belfast City, Gibraltar, Inverness, Jersey, Manchester, and Newcastle. Travellers will therefore be able to experience better connectivity between Finland and airports in the UK, Channel Islands, and Gibraltar.

Customers will be able to use these services by booking directly through Finnair. They will be able to fly from their chosen regional airport with British Airways and then connect to Finnair flights at Heathrow Airport. This will open up many new destinations, including Helsinki and Lapland, as well as far-eastern routes such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Singapore, and Seoul. Finnair will now offer customers six daily flights from Heathrow, double daily flights from Manchester, and up to seven weekly flights from Edinburgh to the Finnish capital.

Anssi Partanen, Finnair Market Director Europe, has commented on the expansion, saying that there has been a growing demand for flights to Helsinki across the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, not only the UK.

Partanen stated:

“We are extremely excited to be expanding our codeshare with British Airways to ensure customers travelling from across the country can enjoy seamless connectivity on Finnair’s flights from London”

How do codeshares work?

A codeshare agreement between airlines, such as Finnair and British Airways, is a type of partnership where one airline sells tickets for a flight operated by another airline. Airlines use this to expand their operational network and increase sales. Codeshare can work in different ways; however, one of the most common is when an airline sells tickets between flights with a layover, where one airline will fly from point A to point B while their partner will operate the second half of the flight between points B and C.

This is convenient for travellers because they have access to more flight options and new destinations. It also makes it easier for customers to book connecting flights between domestic and international routes without needing to book multiple airlines separately. Customers are also still able to earn miles on their preferred airline.

An airline can have multiple codeshare partners. British Airways has many codeshare agreements , including Finnair, Kenya Airways, Loganair and Bangkok Airways.
