Aircraft lessor SMBC Aviation Capital placed a firm order for 100 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft, made up of 65 A321neo jets and 35 A320neo jets, Airbus said. The agreement was finalised on July 20, 2026, at the Farnborough International Airshow.

SMBC Aviation Capital CEO Peter Barrett said the order is aimed at giving airline customers “a continuous delivery pipeline” of the latest-generation A320neo-family aircraft into the mid-2030s, framing it as a long-term bet on narrowbody demand and fleet renewal.

The image is taken with a wide-angle lens, emphasizing the large turbofan engine and the wing with a winglet extending towards a clear blue sky. The fuselage features large green lettering, and a ground crew member in a yellow high-visibility vest stands near the landing gear. Airbus executive Benoît de Saint-Exupéry said the A320neo family is the world’s most leased and most traded aircraft, describing SMBC’s purchase as a reflection of continued global appetite for efficient single-aisle jets. Airbus also noted that SMBC Aviation Capital and its parent, Sumitomo Corp., together account for more than 900 Airbus commitments across aircraft types.

SMBC positioned the Airbus deal as part of a 200-aircraft Farnborough package: 100 A320neo-family aircraft from Airbus and 100 737 MAX aircraft from Boeing (60 MAX 10s and 40 MAX 8s). SMBC also said it signed a separate agreement with CFM International covering up to 90 additional LEAP 1A engines to support its Airbus A320neo-family orders (70 firm, with purchase rights for 20 more).

Reuters also reported that deliveries for SMBC’s Airbus order are set to start in the first half of the next decade, underscoring the degree to which popular narrowbodies are now being sold into future production slots.

Why this matters

The A320neo family’s massive installed base and deep secondary market generally make it easier to place aircraft with airlines, release them, or trade them, which is one reason Airbus calls it the most leased and traded.

The mix (65 A321neos) mirrors airline demand. The A321neo is the larger member of the A320neo family and is widely sought for its capacity and range flexibility, useful for both growth and replacement as carriers upgauge. Airbus itself highlights the A321neo as the family’s largest member with “unparalleled range and performance”.

Airbus says the A320neo family delivers at least 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared with previous-generation single-aisle aircraft, which is still the core economic case for fleet renewal.
