Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) ranked third among the 50 largest U.S. airports for passenger pickup convenience, according to a study by travel website Upgraded Points. The ranking highlighted by the Port of Oakland on Oct. 27 places the East Bay airport behind John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County and San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC), making California home to the study’s top three airports.

Nearby Waiting Lot Helps OAK

Oakland received an overall score of 82.4 out of 100 in the study, which assessed nine factors related to the experience of picking up arriving passengers. These included flight reliability, passenger volume, parking costs, waiting facilities, taxi-in times, and the distance between the airport and the city center.

One of Oakland’s strongest results was the distance between its cell phone waiting lot and its terminal. According to the study, the lot is approximately 0.6 miles from the terminals, tying for the shortest distance among the 50 airports evaluated.

Cell phone lots allow drivers to wait for arriving passengers without circling the terminal or occupying curbside pickup areas before passengers are ready. A shorter drive to the terminal can make it easier for drivers to coordinate pickups after receiving confirmation that their passengers have collected their luggage.

The study also reported that 81.21% of arriving flights at Oakland were on time, while the average delay was 10.1 minutes. Across the airports included in the analysis, the arrival delay was 15.3 minutes.

California Airports Take the Top Three

Oakland placed third behind two other California airports. John Wayne Airport (SNA) ranked first with a score of 85, followed by San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) with 84.6. Oakland’s score of 82.4 completed the state’s sweep of the top three positions

“This recognition reflects OAK’s ongoing commitment to providing a convenient, customer-friendly airport experience,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon. “From easy terminal access to efficient curbside operations, OAK continues to deliver the accessibility and ease of use that travelers have come to expect from the Bay Area’s most convenient airport”

The results offer a comparison of airport pickup conditions for Bay Area travelers choosing between Oakland and San Jose, however, the ranking does not establish that Oakland is the easiest airport for every traveler to use as the experience can vary depending on the time of day, traffic conditions, terminal, and pickup arrangements.

Oaklands serves the East Bay and is accessible by road and Bay Area Rapid Transportation (BART). Its location gives travelers in parts of the East Bay an alternative to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)

What the Study Measures and What It Doesn’t

The study evaluated the 50 largest U.S. airports using nine weighted factors. The analysis considered the availability and proximity of cell phone lots, average short-term parking costs, on-time arrival rates, average arrival delays, taxi-in times, ride-share pickup arrangements, passenger volume per terminal, and the distance from the city center.

The researchers drew on information from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, official airport websites, and Google Maps. The factors were weighted and combined into a score out of 100, with higher scores representing more favorable conditions for passenger pickups.

The ranking should not be considered a real-time assessment of airport congestion, since the analysis is based on data collected in July 2026 and did not account for temporary constructions, traffic incidents, weather, time of day, security restrictions or a driver’s familiarity with an airport.
