Archer Aviation has completed a series of piloted demonstration flights over San Francisco Bay, using Oakland International Airport (OAK) as a base as the California company works toward bringing electric air taxi services to major cities. Announced Oct. 19, the flights were part of Archer’s “No Roads” tour, which showcased its Midnight aircraft operating in the airspace surrounding the Bay Area’s three major airports.

Demonstration Flights Covered Seven Northern California Cities

Archer said Midnight traveled through seven Northern California cities over three days, covering more than 200 miles and reaching top speeds of 131 mph. The journey began in Salinas and included stops in Hollister, San Martin, San Jose, Mountain View, Hayward and Oakland. The aircraft completed multiple flights around San Francisco Bay, taking off and landing at Oakland International Airport (OAK). Archer said a trip from Oakland to San Francisco’s Marina District took approximately 10 minutes, compared with more than an hour by car in traffic.

The demonstrations were intended to show how electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft could operate withing busy urban airspace. The Bay Area presents a particular challenge because of the proximity of San Francisco International, Oakland International and San Jose Mineta International airports.

“The Bay Area is the innovation center of the world, but even here American lose multiple weeks a year sitting in traffic on bridges and highways,” Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said in the company’s announcement.

Archer is developing Midnight for short urban journeys, with the aim of offering an alternative to congested roads. Goldstein also mentioned the company’s plan to bring this future not only to the Bay Area but to Los Angeles and other cities across the United States.

Commercial Service Still Faces Obstacles

The recent demonstrations do not mean commercial passenger services are ready to begin. Integrating eVTOL aircraft into existing air traffic systems, obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and establishing suitable take off and landing infrastructure remain important steps toward routine operations. Archer said the Northern California flights involved coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and state and local partners.

The program is intended to help advance real-world uses for electric air-taxis, however, the upcoming challenge for the Bay Area will be turning successful demonstrations flights into a practical transportation option, including determining where passengers could board, how much trips might cost, and how services would connect with existing airports.

For now, Archer’s flights offer a glimpse of how air taxi services could eventually complement conventional ground transportation, but widespread passenger service will depend on regulatory, operational and infrastructure developments.
