Lufthansa is allowing aviation enthusiasts to own a genuine piece of one of its most iconic aircraft as the airline prepares to retire its remaining Airbus A340-600 fleet.
The German flag carrier is expected to withdraw its final four Airbus A340-600 aircraft at the end of the 2026 summer schedule as part of a wider fleet modernisation strategy. The retirement marks the end of more than two decades of service for the four-engine widebody, which has been a familiar sight on Lufthansa’s long-haul network.
Authentic Aircraft Parts Available for Purchase
Rather than sending every aircraft directly for recycling, Lufthansa is allowing fans to preserve part of the aircraft’s legacy through its Lufthansa Upcycling initiative.
The programme offers genuine aircraft components transformed into collectable and functional items, including fuselage skin sections, cabin interior pieces and other parts removed from retired aircraft. The initiative aims to give aviation enthusiasts, collectors and frequent flyers the chance to own an authentic piece of Lufthansa history while supporting sustainable reuse of retired aircraft materials.
Each item is accompanied by documentation verifying its authenticity, making the products attractive keepsakes for aviation enthusiasts and memorabilia collectors.

End of an Era for the Airbus A340-600
The Airbus A340-600 entered Lufthansa’s fleet in 2003 and became one of the airline’s flagship long-haul aircraft, serving destinations across North America, Asia and Africa. Known for its distinctive four-engine design and long, slender fuselage, the aircraft was once among the world’s longest passenger jets.
Its retirement reflects the airline’s transition toward newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which offer lower operating costs and reduced emissions. The phase-out also forms part of Lufthansa Group’s broader cost-saving and fleet optimisation plans announced earlier this year.
