United Airlines first A321-200NY(XLR) and iMTOW B787-9

On June 3, 2026, United Airlines (UA, Chicago O’Hare) took delivery of its first A321-200NY(XLR) after news of the N64321 (msn 12581) was ferried from Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport (XFW) to Tampa International Airport (TPA). This is the first aircraft from an order of fifty A321-200NY(XLR)s that United ordered directly from Airbus.

United Receives their First Airbus A321XLR

United Airlines is the second carrier in the United States to receive an XLR, after American Airlines. Jet Blue Airways is also expected to operate the type in the future. There are five more XLRs that have already received registrations and will be delivered to United shortly. 

United, last month also took delivery of the first increased maximum takeoff weight (iMTOW) B787-9. The new United aircraft is said to be delivered to United Airlines to increase maximum takeoff weight (iMTOW), a new milestone in the carrier’s modernisation strategy. Due to the higher weight limit the aircraft can carry three metric tonnes (3,000kg) that can mean more passengers.

Fleet expansion supports boosted storage and long-haul flights

The aircraft will be able to fly more than 300 miles (555 km) farther with the same metric of weight. Boeing will also introduce an iMTOW B787-10, which will be able to carry about five metric tonnes of extra weight. As well as over 400 nautical miles (740 kilometres) of additional range. 

The Airbus A321XLR is the longest range narrowbody that has been produced in aviation, allowing airlines to operate on streamlined long haul routes without the larger widebody aircraft. United is in the middle of its United Next campaign which includes orders from several Airbus’ and Boeings. The scheme is to invest in more fuel-efficient aircraft to replace the older jets that they have.
