The Lufthansa Group has opened its new Hangar One visitor and conference centre at Frankfurt Airport (FRA), giving members of the public the chance to explore 100 years of aviation history through an interactive exhibition.
The 6,000-square-metre attraction officially opens to visitors on August 1 and combines historical aircraft, interactive displays and event spaces, while also offering insight into the future of aviation.
Showing a century of aviation
Lufthansa Group says Hangar One will take visitors on a journey through 100 years of aviation and Lufthansa history, highlighting the airline group’s brands, technology and logistics operations.
The exhibition features interactive displays, audio guides and exhibits that are being shown to the public for the first time. It also explores Lufthansa’s role during the Nazi era, addressing what the airline described as the darkest chapter in its history.
Families are also catered for, with a dedicated children’s audio guide designed to introduce younger people to the world of aviation in an accessible way.
Historic aircraft take centre stage
At the heart of the exhibition are two historic aircraft: a Junkers Ju 52, representing the early years of Lufthansa, and a Lockheed Super Star, symbolising the airline’s post war revival in the 1950s. The airline said visitors will be able to tour the interior of the Lockheed from the end of the year whilst the Ju 52 will be open during selected events.
To mark the opening on August 1, Lufthansa will also screen its anniversary documentary, ‘We are the Journey’, exclusively at Hangar One before it becomes available onboard long-haul flights.
Hangar One flight simulator
Alongside the exhibition, Hangar One includes a cafe, aviation themed shop and seven meeting rooms that can be hired for business and private events.
A flight simulator built around the original cockpit of a Diamond DA42 aircraft will also allow visitors to experience flying. As well this, a bar will be available for private events onboard the Lockheed.
Tickets for the attraction are available online with standard adult admission priced at €8.
