Southwest Airlines is allegedly being sued $215,576 after a flight attendant flooded a hotel. The lawsuit claims the crew member negligently interfered with fire sprinklers in her room during a layover in Florida.

The Incident

This incident occurred on Feb. 1, 2025, however, as of mid-April 2026, the airline has filed preliminary paperwork but has not yet formally responded to the specific allegations.

On a layover stop in Florida, in the Renaissance Hotel on 17th Street, Fort Lauderdale, a Southwest Airlines crew member “negligently interfered” with fire sprinklers in her room. However, this also allegedly triggered sprinklers to go off not only in the flight attendant’s room, but other rooms in the hotel, forcing them to cancel guest reservations.

The hotel claims restoration experts were brought in to dry out, sanitise, and deodorise the affected rooms. Flooding is alleged to have also extended beyond rooms to communal areas of the hotel including the front desk and offices.

The Lawsuit

The hotel room was paid for by Southwest Airlines and as an employee under the company’s reservation, the hotel wants to hold Southwest directly responsible for the damages given that the flight attendant was also on duty. The hotel, which says the damages exceeded $50,000, is claiming over $215,000 in damages.

The lawsuit claims that there were clear signs in the room against interfering with equipment. The hotel has even retained an independent “fire sprinkler expert” who can testify that the sprinkler was in working condition and that the damages were a direct result of the crew member’s actions.

The hotel’s claim states:

“The room was reserved and paid for by Southwest Airlines, making the carrier directly responsible for the actions of its employee while on duty layover.”

The airline is yet to issue a detailed public response to the hotel’s allegations.
