On May 14, 2026, it was announced by President Donald Trump that China is to place an order for 200 Boeing aircraft following his trip to Beijing. This signals new possible trade relations between the United States and China that has been at a standstill for a long time.

Boeing’s First Major Chinese Order
President Trump following high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing had suggested the agreement for 200 aircraft orders could potentially expand to 750 aircraft. Although there has not been any formal confirmation issued by the Chinese government or Boeing for the expansion of the deal. The proposal would represent Boeing’s first major Chinese order in a decade of trading due to the prolonged trade tensions between China and the U.S..
There has also been a slow down of sales due to the scrutiny following the 737 MAX crisis, and increased competition from Airbus. Although 200 aircraft orders is a feat in terms of sales between China and the U.S. it still fell short of the current market expectation. Analysts had anticipated an order that would be around 500 aircraft during Trump’s visit, but due to it not meeting expectations the Boeing’s share price after the announcement had plummeted.
Hopes for a larger deal were to help Boeing for an onward trajectory to recovery and strengthen its position in the market but the expectations fell short during the negotiations.

China’s aircraft demand could boost Boeing’s Presence in China
China is a crucial player in the aviation market with demand for new aircraft on the rise as domestic and international air travel continue to expand.
For Boeing the order would provide a huge boost and create a newfound commercial relationship that has been lost in recent years.
