Saudia and Garuda Indonesia Expand Network Connectivity

On Aug. 27, Saudi Arabia’s national airline Saudia and Indonesia’s Garuda Indonesia announced a Joint Business Framework Agreement, fostering a long-term strategic partnership and greater network integration. This partnership leverages Indonesia’s extensive domestic network and its connection with Australia, as well as Saudia’s network in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

This partnership will allow passengers to more easily book connecting journeys across their networks, enhancing the travel experience. The airlines will also collaborate on sales and marketing initiatives to promote their services to a larger market. Garuda Indonesia President Director & CEO Glenny Kairupan highlighted that the partnership would combine the strengths of both airlines’ networks and commercial capabilities. He said:

“We see this partnership not only as going beyond connectivity but it is also about combining the strengths of our respective networks and commercial capabilities to offer customers greater choice, better access and a more seamless travel experience.”

Why This Partnership is Strategic

Saudi Arabia is a major destination for Muslim pilgrims traveling for Hajj and Umrah, two Islamic pilgrimages to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

According to the International Centre of Law and Religion Studies, Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population. In Indonesia, 87.54% of the population is Muslim, which accounts for 12.7% of the world’s Muslim population. A 2025 study by Erma Rusdiana and colleagues also found that Indonesia also has approximately 200,000 Hajj pilgrims and more than 1 million Umrah pilgrims annually.

This partnership will facilitate travel for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. The Director General of Saudia Group, Ibrahim Al-Omar, mentioned,

“By bringing together the strength and reach of our networks, we are creating broader opportunities for travel across more than 120 destinations spanning Indonesia, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.”

He highlighted the wider range of destinations that will make traveling easier and more seamless. Therefore, both airlines aim to enhance the overall travel experience for Indonesian pilgrims and Umrah guests.
