The ongoing closure of airspace across northern, western, and central India has severely disrupted the nation’s aviation sector, with operations suspended at over 20 airports. This includes key hubs like: Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Amritsar, and Chandigarh. Effective through at least May 10, 2025, this unprecedented shutdown impacts 27 airports spanning from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujurat, resulting in the cancellation of over 430 domestic flights, and 147 in Pakistan. The prolonged restrictions have placed significant operational and financial strain on airlines, passengers, and related industries.

Operational impact

The operational impact is substanctial. Data indicates a near complete ceessation of civilian air traffic in the affected regions, compelling airlinees such as IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air to implement costly rerouting strategies or cancel flights altogether. International carriers, including Amerircan Airlines, have suspended services like the New York-Delhi route or diverted flights to alternate hubs susch as Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Airlines have responded with shutdown’s duration continues to exacerbate disruptions. The closure of smaller regional access, including Bathinda, Halwara, and Pathankot, alongside restricted access to military airbases, has further complicated logistics, impacting supply chains and regional economies.

Regional stability

While geopolitical factors, including heightened security measures following military action between India and Pakistan, contribute to the airspace restrictions, the broader implicatinos lie in the aviation sector’s exposure to external shocks. The crisis highlights critical deficiencies in contingency planning, including limited rerouting capabilities and inadequate passenger support mechanisms, posing risk to long-term operational stability.

Looking onward

Travelers are advised to remain in constant communication with their airlines to check the status of their flights and avoid further disruptions. Airlines are adjusting to the dynamic scenario and much remains fluid. Further delays and cancellations are possible.
