In a move to capitalise on the “growing winter leisure market”, this new Tromsø travel opportunity has become the airline’s northernmost destination.  A festive wonderland brimming with winter activities that ranks high on the bucket list for cold-weather enthusiasts. Offering its stunning natural Norwegian landscapes, a festive feel, and an abundance of activities, this new premium route offered by BA promises a potentially perfect Arctic adventure.

A bit about the new route

British Airways will operate flights twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, using the Airbus A320neo, a modern, low-noise-emissions aircraft. Sustainability-conscious passengers will be delighted to know that this particular aircraft boasts a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to its predecessor.

Flight BA 612 departs London Heathrow (LHR) twice a week. The outbound flight BA 612 departs from Heathrow at 08:25 on Thursdays and 08:15 on Sundays, arriving in Tromsø (TOS) at 13:00 and 12:50, respectively. Meanwhile, the return flight BA 613 leaves Tromsø at 14:00 on Thursdays and 13:40 on Sundays, landing back at Heathrow at 16:45 and 16:25.

British Airways Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, Neil Chernoff, suggested that “We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this.” Chernoff also touched on the “abundance of cold-weather activities” available. With that being said, it is only right that Travel Radar delves deeper into the details of this destination for readers considering booking this exciting new adventure to Tromsø.

Key Things to Do in Tromsø

Witness the Aurora Borealis

Tromsø, Norway is a renowned hot spot for winter activities. If you missed the Northern Lights that visited the UK this year, or just want more of the taste that British residents were given in October, then never fear. Tromsø is often considered one of the world’s top locations for viewing the Northern Lights. Positioned in the aurora oval, the city offers prime viewing conditions from late autumn to early spring. Guided tours or private excursions are available and can help eager tourists find the best spots to witness this natural phenomenon.

Embrace Arctic Adventures

Despite the cold weather, those fortunate enough to visit will be met with an array of possible winter activities. From dog sledding across snowy landscapes to thrilling whale-watching expeditions, Tromsø is a hub for cold-weather adventures. For the adrenaline seekers among you, you can also enjoy snowmobiling, skiing, and hiking through the pristine Arctic wilderness.

Explore Tromsø’s everlasting Christmas Spirit.

During winter, and especially in the month this route has been launched, Tromsø transforms into a magical festive destination. There is currently a Christmas market in the main square, Stortorget. This central hub of the city offers handcrafted gifts, Nordic treats, and a magnificent Christmas tree. All this helps to create a warm and enchanting atmosphere for winter lovers amidst the Arctic chill.
