airBaltic has affirmed its commitment to resuming flights into Ukraine once the airspace opens. An airBaltic delegate visited Kyiv this week to meet local stakeholders and discuss opportunities to reconnect air activity.

The meeting

The visit saw the airBaltic delegation meet with representatives from the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, Boryspil International Airport, and the Embassy of Latvia to Ukraine.

Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic, said:

We have consistently expressed our plans for airBaltic to be the first airline back in Ukraine when it is safe, and we stand by this commitment. The safety of our employees, passengers, and operations will always be our highest priority, and following our second in-person visit to Kyiv, preparations for our return are well underway. We look forward to restoring the vital air links and contributing to Ukraine’s aviation recovery.

Serhiy Derkach, Deputy Minister of Development of Communitites and Territories of Ukraine, was appreciative of airBaltic’s “cooperation and commitment”. He added that he “welcomes its readiness to expand operations and reconnect Ukraine with Europe” as the country rebuilds its aviation sector.

The meeting proposed economical benefits for Ukraine. Oleksiy Dubrevskyy, CEO of Boryspil International Airport, said:

This visit by airBaltic marks a significant step toward restoring air connectivity between Ukraine and the world after war. The growing interest from international carriers in returning to the Ukrainian market reaffirms the aviation industry’s readiness to resume operations as soon as the security situation allows for the reopening of our airspace.

An outlook of the future

airBaltic is excited to indulge in the reopening of Ukraine’s airspace. Resuming flights will reconnect the three Baltic capitals with Kyiv and Lviv. In addition to rescheduling Ukrainian routes, the airline has decided to improve its reach onto Ukrainian passengers. As a result, the Latvian carrier has integrated the Ukrainian language into its official website, enhancing convenience and accessibility.

All passenger flights to Ukraine have been suspended since Feb. 24, 2022, majorly affecting air travel. Although talks are ongoing, no official date has been set for its reopening.
