The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investing $481 million in airport infrastructure across the United States, funding projects involving runways, taxiways, terminals, aprons, and other critical facilities. The latest round of funding was announced on Sept. 3, with 191 grants going to airports in 36 states and two U.S. territories through the Airport Infrastructure Grants program. The projects vary significantly, from major reconstruction work at some of the country’s busiest airports to improvements at smaller general aviation facilities.

Atlanta Tops FAA Grants With $100 Million Award

One of the largest awards is $100 million for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in Georgia. The funding will support runway, taxiway, and terminal reconstruction, along with improvements to runway safety areas. As one of the world’s busiest airports, Atlanta handles a significant volume of passengers and aircraft activity, making infrastructure maintenance and upgrades an ongoing requirement.

Other major awards include $32.5 million for Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) in Kentucky for terminal reconstruction and $30.3 million for San Diego International Airport (SAN) in California for terminal construction.

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) in Wisconsin is receiving $14.2 million for taxiway construction and rehabilitation, while El Paso International Airport (ELP) in Texas will receive $8.7 million to rehabilitate its aircraft apron.

Funding Extends Beyond Major Commercial Terminals

This funding is not limited to large commercial airports. The FAA also announced a $2.5 million grant for general aviation airports in Wisconsin that will support projects including terminal reconstruction, runway and taxiway rehabilitation, and reconstruction of a building used for snow-removal equipment.

“From our regional hubs to some of America’s busiest airports, we are investing in critical infrastructure that will provide American families a more seamless, efficient travel experience for years to come,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.

While major terminal projects can have a direct impact on the passenger experience, improvements to runways, taxiways, aprons, lighting, and other airfield facilities are equally important to day-to-day operations.

Under FAA’s Airport Improvement Program, federal funding can support these kinds of projects. Airports are entitled to a certain amount of funding each year based on passenger volume. while additional discretionary funding can be awarded when infrastructure needs exceed given funding.

FAA Build on Multi-Billion Dollar Push

This announcement is also part of a broader series of airport funding decisions made by the FAA this year.

In July, the FAA announced $1.776 billion in airport grants across 46 states, covering projects ranging from runway rehabilitation to safety and passenger-focused improvements.

A month later, the agency announced nearly $615 million across 238 grants in 42 states and two U.S. territories, the round included runway rehabilitation, terminal improvements and funding for a new airport in Noatak, Alaska.

The latest round therefore adds another significant investment to an ongoing program of airport improvements across the country.

“These grants will help airports across the country meet the demands of today’s travelers while preparing for the future” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.

With 191 projects receiving funding in this latest round, the announcements highlight the efforts to upgrade the facilities supporting the country’s aviation network.
