The technical issue that occurred with the UK’s air traffic control system operated by National Air Traffic Services (NATS) on Tuesday Sept. 8 has caused chaos for tenss of thousands of passengers at numerous large aviation hubs over the past few days. With the impacts of the fault causing rippling effects days later, here is an update of the developments of the week.

The official portrait of Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander. Alexander is a middle aged Caucasian female presenting individual with shoulder length platinum greyish hair and green eyes. She is wearing a navy blue suit jacket and a teal coloured top underneath. She is smiling close-mouthed, and has a dimple under her lip on one side. The background is grey.

Avoidable Issues

In response to the air traffic control system operated by National Air Traffic Services (NATS) failing for four hours on Tuesday, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the Commons that she had ordered an independent investigation by an aviation watchdog into the system, to establish the cause of the fault, and to evaluate the system’s overall operational efficacy. Alexander has highlighted that after meeting with the boss of NATS, Martin Rolfe, a cyberattack can be ruled out as the cause, but she added that she believed the failure was avoidable.

Since the incident, NATS has apologised for its third major technical fault in three years, following two other serious operational failures in 2023 and 2025. A spokesperson emphasised that Alexander and the Prime Minister remained confident in the competency of Rolfe.

While Rolfe, who has led NATS for 11 years, has reportedly maintained the confidence of some, the CEOs of some airlines, such as Wizz Air and Ryanair, have repeatedly called for him to resign from his position.

A Boeing 737-800 operated by budget airline Ryanair is pictured taking off. The aircraft is mostly white with a navy blue underbelly and tail, which has the deep yellow-gold logo on it. There is also navy blue lettered branding along the side, with a yellow stripe. The background is a greyish sky with mountains visible in the distance. Some residential properties can be seen just behind the airport boundaries.

No Compensation and Further Disruption

Despite the havoc caused for passengers this week, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has said that it is unlikely that most will be entitled to any compensation. This is because the air traffic control issue is most likely to be ruled as the result of extraordinary circumstances, and so delays or cancellations that were directly caused by the incident will not be considered valid for reimbursement. However, the authority emphasised the responsibility of airlines to look after passengers whose flights had been delayed or cancelled.

Passengers have been encouraged to continually check the status of their flight before they travel for updates as delays persist. While a considerable number of flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick were flights cancelled on Thursday September 10, the flight disruption does appear to be easing.
