Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ) suspends all operations from April 23 to May 27, due to main runway refurbishments. This shutdown is part of a 31 million euros upgrade programme which was announced by the Spanish airport operator AENA.

SCQ is a major international airport located 10km from Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Formerly Lavacolla, it was renamed in 2020 to honor Galician poet Rosalía de Castro. SCQ serves as the main hub for the Galicia region and as a key hub for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
It features a modern, Y-shaped terminal opened in 2011 and it handles over 5 million passengers annually. Major operators include Ryanair, Vueling, Iberia, and British Airways.
During the 2026 closure, alternative airports include A Coruña Airport (LCG) or Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport/Porto Airport (OPO).
The Closure and Refurbishments
The airport is undergoing maintenance, with no flights arriving or departing from April 23 to May 27, 2026. Passengers are advised to use alternative airports and check with airlines for rebooking.
This shutdown is part of a 31 million euros upgrade programme which includes major resurfacing works on the airport’s main runway.
“During this period, the airport will be closed to all air traffic, and no takeoffs or landings will take place.”
Most flights from the UK to Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport operate out of London-based airports, including Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), and Stansted (STN). While there are also non-direct flights to Santiago-Rosalía de Castro from Manchester (MAN). Therefore, this closure is estimated to effect 30 UK flights weekly.
