Wizz Air is expanding its footprint in southern Italy as it reports a year of improved performance and operational stability in 2025. This reinforces its strategy of growth focused on reliability, cost control and customer experience. The low-cost carrier confirmed it will open a new operating base at Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport, further strengthening its presence in Sicily as part of a wider European expansion.

Strong 2025 Results Support Growth Plans

In its latest performance update, Wizz Air stated it carried over 60 million passengers in 2025, supported by a larger fleet and improved operational resilience. The airline reported higher punctuality and completion rates, alongside fewer cancellations compared with previous years, citing better fleet utilisation and operational planning.

Wizz Air also highlighted progress in customer experience, including improved on-time performance and continued investment in newer aircraft. The carrier now operates one of the youngest fleets in Europe, with an average aircraft age of under six years, largely made up of Airbus A320neo and A321neo jets, which offer lower fuel burn and reduced emissions.

Palermo Base to Drive Capacity and Connectivity

From August 1, Wizz Air will base two Airbus A321neo aircraft in Palermo, enabling 10 routes to seven countries and nearly one million seats in 2026. This represents a capacity increase of more than 200% compared with current operations at the airport.

Domestic growth will be a key focus. Palermo-Turin will operate daily from May 4, while Palermo-Milan Malpensa will increase to twice daily from August. Services to Bologna will rise to 11 weekly flights, and Venice to 10 weekly flights. Internationally, Wizz Air will launch new routes to Tel Aviv, operating three times per week from August 1, and to Sharm el Sheikh, starting August 2 with four weekly flights, strengthening leisure links from Sicily.

The airline has stated that this Palermo expansion reflects the strong demand for affordable travel and supports regional connectivity and tourism growth.
