The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will pause flight operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 23 to support the Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race event, as part of the United States’ (U.S.) extended celebrations marking its 250th anniversary of independence. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will take place on the streets around the National Mall, just over 5 km away from the airport.
Security measures
The Federal Aviation Administration said the flight suspensions at DCA are to ensure air traffic efficiency and safety, with the Freedom 250 Grand Prix celebrations featuring fireworks, aerial displays and special event flyovers.
The FAA said in a statement:
“The FAA has been planning and coordinating with stakeholders to help ensure the safe and efficient movement of air traffic during Freedom 250 events.”
DCA advised travellers to double-check flight times and consult their airlines for scheduling information if travelling on the same day, and said airline flight schedules have been adjusted to avoid any interference with the celebrations.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is one of three main airports serving the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., with the others being Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Celebrations and closures
U.S. independence celebrations in July caused other flight suspensions at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, including on July 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Independence Day aerial display rehearsals, and all day from noon on July 4 for Independence Day celebrations, as well as on July 10 for the Great American State Fair closeout.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race is a motorsports event featuring 147 laps of open-wheel car racing, and will be the first of its kind to take place around the National Mall, which is one of the U.S.’ most visited national park sites, according to Washington State.
The Federal Aviation Administration is the U.S.’s civil aviation regulator, with responsibilities including air traffic control, airport safety standards, and aircraft certifications.
