American Airlines and IndiGo have launched their new codeshare agreement.

Announced in September 2021, the partnership was awaiting further approval from relevant authorities before being able to launch.

Further details

Major U.S carrier American Airlines happens to be both the U.S and the world’s largest airline by fleet size, scheduled passengers carried, and revenue passenger miles. Its latest partnership with India’s largest airline by passengers carried and fleet size, IndiGo, already sounds like a perfect match.

The codeshare agreement between the two major carriers allows American Airlines passengers to book travel beyond Delhi on two of IndiGo’s popular domestic routes – Mumbai and Bengaluru from New York.

Members of American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty programme can also earn miles when travelling on American’s codeshare flights operated by IndiGo.

This is only the beginning, as a statement from American Airlines confirmed that IndiGo and the Texas-based carrier have plans to extend the codeshare in the near future to include more than a dozen additional destinations in India.

Anmol Bhargava, American’s Vice President of Global Alliances and Partnerships, said:

“Our partnership with IndiGo furthers our mission to build a leading global network, which includes an average of more than 375 daily flights to more than 110 international destinations this summer.”

Ronojoy Dutta, IndiGo Chief Executive Officer, spoke on the opportunities she believes the new codeshare will offer India as a whole. Increased trade and tourism growth will be helped by IndiGo’s “seamless” nationwide connectivity.

IndiGo has been experiencing rapid growth as it already has codeshare agreements with other major airlines such as Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Air France-KLM. Reportedly, the Gurgaon-based carrier is in talks with 3-4 more airlines and could potentially grow its partnerships with airlines across the globe to 12 in the coming years. It is thought that the carrier is focusing on a potential deal with Australian flag carrier Qantas.
