Greece has become the latest country to announce its intention to drop travel restrictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to reports, from Monday 2nd May, travellers from anywhere in the world will be permitted entry into Greece restriction-free. The decision was announced by Thanos Plevris, Greece’s Health Minister.

Mr Plevris confirmed that all travellers, regardless of origin, would be exempt from current requirements to provide valid tests, vaccination, or recovery documentation upon arrival.

Domestic restrictions also to end

The announcement also included notice that domestic COVID-19 restrictions are also to be dropped. As a result, tourists will be allowed unrestricted access to restaurants, bars and cafes without providing similar certificates.

The tourism industry is vital for Greece and the country attracted over 33 million visitors in the year prior to the pandemic. The crucial summer season usually begins after the Orthodox Easter, falling this year on Sunday 24th of April.

Officials have noted that whilst restrictions will be lifted for the important season, entry restrictions may be reintroduced again in September.

Greece reported 84,953 new COVID-19 infection cases over the last seven days. Around 82% of the adult population has received their first dose of the vaccine, with 64% receiving a full course.

In the meantime, travellers to the Mediterranean country will continue to be required to present documentation to gain entry. When arriving in Greece today, most travellers are opting to present a vaccination passport, valid as long as it proves that the holder has received at least one vaccination shot in the past nine months or has received an additional vaccine dose at any time.

So-called ‘recovery passes’ are also accepted in Greece, but only if they prove the holder recovered from the virus within the past 180 days.

Many other European countries have begun lifting COVID restrictions amid a slow return to normality. Scotland axed its entry restrictions last month, with travellers no longer required to complete a passenger locator form and present proof of their vaccination status or test before arrival.
