Inaugural Flight CANCELLED over Bird Strike

On November 14th, over 180 eager passengers waited at Green Bay, in Wisconsin USA, to board Frontier Airlines’ inaugural flight to Orlando, Florida, but things did not go quite to plan.

An Airbus A320-200, registration N210FR, operating flight number F9-1230, touched down on runway 36 at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) from Orando International (MCO), and taxied in to gate 5 ready to perform the inaugural return flight to Orlando – Bridging the cold north, with the sunny south and was determined to pull out all the stops to ensure a successful launch. However, things took a turn for the worse when during a Pre-Flight inspection, it was revealed the engine had ingested a bird on the flight up from Florida.

Frontier were pulling out all the stops for the inaugural flight, getting passengers in the ‘Disney Mood’ with free Mickey & Minnie Mouse ears, alongside a complimentary buffet-style breakfast in Green Bay. When boarding-time arose, boards were updated to ‘Delayed’ without formal announcement. One passenger from the flight, meant to be operating F9-1231, said:

After all the celebrations it was a little deflating. As people started to receive flight updates on their mobile phones, it was now obvious our flight was being cancelled.

The flight was subsequently rescheduled, with Frontier airlines apologising for the “uncontrollable circumstances”. The carrier offered passengers the option of rebooking for the following day, or a full ticket refund. F9-1231 departed on-time on 15th November, one day after it’s cancellation, taking rebooked passengers to balmy 24 degree sun in the South.
