Two aircraft suffered tyre damage while landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) just four hours apart on Monday, Aug. 17. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating.

What happened?

An American Airlines flight blew two tyres while landing. The aircraft, coming from LaGuardia Airport (LGA), landed safely at around 2 p.m. local time. Passengers got off using stairs, the FAA said. Buses were seen near the aircraft, taking passengers to the terminal.

At around 3:45 p.m., Chopper 7 was overhead, along with several fire trucks and police cars, surrounding the American Airlines aircraft.

American Airlines said the aircraft has been taken out of service for inspection, stating:

“We thank our team members for their professionalism, and we apologize to our customers for their experience.”

The passengers experienced no major delays.

Four hours later, a United Airlines flight from Omaha, Nebraska, also suffered tyre damage when it landed at O’Hare Airport. Like the American Airlines flight, passengers disembarked using stairs and were transported to the terminal by bus.

No passengers were injured in either incident.

Similar issues have happened recently

Less than a week ago, a United Airlines flight had to abort takeoff after blowing tyres at Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport. Passengers were deplaned on the runway and taken to a terminal via buses. No passengers were injured in this incident.

Earlier this month, a Southwest Airlines flight had nose gear tyre issues while landing at Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW). Both tyres “lost air pressure”, said Southwest. At around 7 a.m., Chopper 7 was overhead, and first responders surrounded the aircraft. No injuries were reported in this incident either.
