British Airways recently announced the introduction of two newest and unique weather apps to replace the airline’s weather report system, which is currently being produced manually. The latest weather technology will enhance weather delivery and optimise flight operations.
British Airways Introduces Next-Generation Weather Apps
As a part of British Airways’ £7 Billion Transformation Plan, British Airways will introduce new forms of advanced technology by implementing two next-generation weather apps aiming to boost weather data by helping and providing real-life information for pilots and flight planning teams. The next-generation apps are important in helping pilots be more precise in their understanding of bad weather forecasts.
Currently the teams are carrying out and predicting flight operations according to manually produced weather reports, generated before the flight. Introducing real-time weather apps is life-changing for efficient planning and adapting to diverse flight paths.
The first app announced by British Airways is Guidor by SkyConsei, with plans to be utilised by pilots to offer them stream access to weather forecasts from The Weather Company in real-time predictions before departure and during flight. The app will work with onboard Wi-Fi connectivity for the latest real-time updates for smoother flight operations.
Next-Generation Weather Integration
The airline’s Integrated Operations Control Center will use the second next-generation app, Fusion by The Weather Company, with plans to be utilised in the future by flight planning teams. The app will work simultaneously with the new technology available to pilots to help improve flight operations by delivering accurate weather changes and essential forecasting information.
Chief Operating Officer at British Airways, René de Groot, stated:
“It’s exciting that we will be the first UK airline to combine the technology of both apps, which will allow us to make even better operational decisions at the moment using real-time data.”
René de Groot continued by explaining how significant the pioneering weather apps are for the future of aviation and the improvement of faster decision-making:
“These applications represent a step-change in the quality of weather information we receive and, in the future, will enable pilots to collaborate in real-time during a flight with operational colleagues on the ground, allowing faster decision-making for different issues like diversion planning and recovery.”
