Wizz Air launched a plan to retire its older Airbus A321s from its fleet. The phasing out of the aircraft is due to the airlines’ renewal program, which aims to modernise the fleet.

About Wizz Air

Wizz Air is a Hungarian carrier, focused on delivering ultra-low-cost services to its passengers. The majority of the destinations are found within Europe; nonetheless, Wizz Air also operates to Africa and the Middle East, to countries such as Egypt and the UAE. Additionally, the airline has three subsidiaries: Wizz Air Malta, Wizz Air Hungary, and Wizz Air UK.

Prior to the current subsidiaries, the carrier had other three. Wizz Air Bulgaria, merged with the main airway in 2011, Wizz Air Ukraine, terminated in 2015, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, shut down in 2025. Also, the airline has two major hubs across Europe, Bratislava Airport (BTS), Slovakia, and Palermo Airport (PMO), Italy.

Presently, the flight operator’s fleet is composed of 241 Airbus aircraft:

  • Six A320-200
  • Six A320neo
  • Six A321XLR
  • 36 A321-200
  • 167 A321ceo

The largest operating Airbus is the A321neo, which covers a crucial portion of flights. Moreover, the carrier is expecting deliveries of 270 new air carriers.

Phasing Out A321s

The retirement of the aircraft is largely due to the plan to modernise the fleet. First delivered in December 2016, the A321s act as the backbone of the airline, serving the majority of flights. However, as newer technologies are developed, the carrier aims to remain current in the aviation market.

Julia Brix, supply chain officer, has said:

“As we retire the ‘A321ceo’ aircraft and transition toward a fleet dominated by Airbus’ Neo technology, we are further reducing fuel burn, lowering emissions, and enhancing efficiency across our network.”

Overall, the greatest reason to modernise the fleet is to keep improving passenger experience with prime technology, as well as engage in sustainable practices in the aviation world.
