Turkish Airlines/Türk Hava Yollari has announced that it is in discussion with Spain-based Air Europa regarding a potential investment. On 20th June, Turkish Airlines announced that “The company is in talks to acquire shares in Spain-based Air Europa.”

What did Turkish Airlines say about the potential investment?

In the statement released, the company shared, “Our Company continuously evaluates growth opportunities to strengthen its position in the global aviation industry and enhance its competitiveness in the market. In this context, as referenced in the media, non-binding discussions are being held to assess the investment opportunity in Air Europa and to explore potential partnership synergies.”

In addition to this, along with the Board of Directors’ decision, the disclosure of this particular non-binding offer was delayed under Article 6 of the Capital Markets Board’s Communiqué on Material Events. The postponement was due to the early stage of discussions and ongoing risks to avoid the investors’ decision regarding the investment.

Last year, International Airlines Group declared its interest in participating in Air Europa’s capital Increase.

Air Europa and the other investors

Earlier this year, Air Europa and Etihad Airways also announced their partnership, with Etihad increasing its number of flights to two daily to Madrid, which is Air Europa’s hub.

Air Europa has attracted five other Industry leaders, such as Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, Etihad, Delta Airlines and now Turkish Airlines. The airline’s post-pandemic recovery and strategy have drawn various investors, while its capital increase is expected to rise to 20% in shares.

While we can only wait for the announcements about the ongoing deal, what do you think about this investment by Turkish Airlines? Let us know in the comments!
