Mexicana, the state-owned flag carrier for Mexico, has taken delivery of its first E195-E2 aircraft from Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, marking a milestone in modernisation for the airline and reinforcing the jet’s presence in Latin America.
An Investment in Mexico
This delivery is the first of 20 E-Jet aircraft ordered by Mexicana: 10 E190-E2 and 10 E195-E2 jets. The deal was announced in 2024 and is considered to be an investment by the Mexican airline to enhance connectivity and operational efficiency. CEO of Mexicana, Leobardo Bojórquez, had the following to say about the acquisition of the next-generation Embraer aircraft:
“This delivery marks a new chapter for Mexicana. The E2’s performance, economics, and passenger appeal make it the perfect aircraft to support our growth strategy. We are excited to bring this new level of service and efficiency to our customers.”
Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commerical Aviation, shared Mexicana’s optimism about the new E-Jet aircraft:
“We are proud to deliver the first E2 to Mexicana and support the airline’s mission to connect more communities across Mexico with greater efficiency and comfort. The E2 is the most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft in the world, and it’s ideally suited to Mexicana’s network and sustainability goals.”
Embraer is also strengthening its position in the Mexican aerospace industry by joining the Mexican Federation of Aerospace Industry (FEMIA), a non-profit organisation that represents private sector aerospace manufacturers in the country. This will provide Embraer with further opportunities for collaboration and business development across Mexico.
About the Jets
The E190-E2 and E195-E2 are both part of the Embraer E-Jet aircraft family, renowned for their quiet, low-emitting and economical operation. The aircraft also come with full fly-by-wire technology, reducing pilot workload and increasing precision and safety during flight. Embraer will also offer support to the Mexicana E2 fleet through its Services & Support organisation, ensuring aircraft availability and operational reliability right from their entrance into service. Both E2 aircraft will be configured with 108 and 132 seats respectively with a comfortable single-class layout, wider aisles, no middle seats and a dedicated space for every passenger’s carry-on luggage, maximising customer comfort and accessibility.
Mexicana is Mexico’s state-owned national airline. Also known as Mexicana de Aviación, it was re-established in 2023 after being acquired by the Mexican government. It was the first airline to use jet aircraft in Mexico and currently serves 14 destinations across Mexico such as Guadalajara (GDL), Puerto Vallarta (PVR) and Tijuana (TIJ), with its main hub located in Mexico City at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU).
