On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed the plan to rebuild Dulles International Airport (DUL) in Washington. The cost is estimated to reach $22 billion.

The Airport’s Current Status

President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the airport by calling it a “real mess”. Trump also said he wants to position the U.S. as the country with the best airports in the world.

“It’s time to ensure that the United States has the greatest airports anywhere in the world,” said the president.

DUL received the title of fastest-growing airport in the country in 2025, seeing a traffic of nearly 30 million passengers throughout the year. This created a growth of 6.4% between 2024 and 2025.

In spite of the recent increase, the president continuously displayed unhappiness with the airport’s looks and operational methods, leading his administration to partner with United Airlines to refurbish the airport.

The Airport’s Makeover

During a meeting at the Oval Office, Trump explained the reason behind DUL’s renovation, stating that the U.S. government is set on “beautifying” Washington, D.C., and that the plan includes a renovation of the city’s international gateway. The president justified the makeover by claiming it was:

“For a major and long overdue renovation and reconstruction of Washington’s really horribly-thought of Dulles.”

The makeover is planned to include five new terminals, which will replace the current four where operations occur. Other new additions will be: moving walkways, an underground pedestrian tunnel, and an expansion of the underground train system. The latter change will make travellers avoid the heavily disliked “mobile lounges”, set to fall into oblivion following the rebuilding.

The proposed plan for the Dulles International Airport makeover is surrounded by controversy. For instance, many believe that the airport’s renovation is somewhat “pointless” for a multitude of reasons, such as the long distance from the city, old shuttle vehicles, and concourses that smell like jet fuel.

What is your opinion on the renovation? Do you think it will be beneficial to Washington, D.C.? Share your reasoning in the comments below.
