Avianca’s recent press conference highlighted its remarkable achievements in 2024 and ambitious plans for 2025, reinforcing its position as a leading airline in Latin America. The event, hosted by Avianca’s executive team, presented key milestones, new initiatives, and strategic insights into its operations, sustainability efforts, and customer experience enhancements. It also highlighted record passenger numbers and route expansion.
Record passenger numbers and route expansion
Avianca reported transporting 38 million passengers in 2024, marking a 27% increase since 2019. This includes a historic 14% of passengers flying for the first time. Avianca now operates 165 routes, introducing 24 new ones and expanding to eight additional destinations. Key additions include flights to Paris, Chicago and Havana as well as expanded domestic connectivity in Colombia. In Brazil, Avianca launched a Sao Paulo -Medellin route while Ecuador and El Salvador also saw increased connectivity with new routes and frequencies.
Advanced customer experience
Avianca introduced upgraded business and first-class offerings to cater to diverse passenger needs. Its Americas-focused business class features premium amenities, while the Insignia business class on long-haul flights to Europe provides lie-flat seats, gourmet menus created by world-renowned chefs, and amenity kits inspired by Colombian and Panamanian indigenous traditions, featuring locally crafted “Mola” designs. The company also enhanced its Lifemiles loyalty program, reporting a 40% growth in members since 2019. All ticket classes now earn miles, with higher accrual rates for premium fares. Lifemiles also introduced a Concierge Club for frequent travelers, offering personalized services and exclusive benefits.
Operational efficacy
Operational improvements were a key focus. Avianca achieved an on-time performance of 82.8% in 2024 up from 78.6% in 2019 and reduced mishandled baggage incidents to 1.53 per 1000 passengers. Response times at contact centers dropped significantly with 98.4% of inquiries resolved on the first call. Therefore, these metrics underscore Avianca’s commitment to delivering reliable and efficient service.
Sustainability and social contribution
Sustainability remains a cornerstone of Avianca’s strategy. Due to fleet modernization and route optimization, the airline successfully reduced CO2 emissions per passenger by 22% compared to 2019. Avianca also emphasised its social responsibility efforts, partnering with organisations to provide healthcare services and support underserved communities in remote areas of Latin America.
Future visions
As 2025 approaches, Avianca aims to further expand its network, elevate the customer experience, and boost its environmental and social initiatives. With a clear focus on innovation and adaptability, Avianca envisions a future where it meets growing passenger demand while maintaining its leadership in the Latin American aviation market.
