Brazillian aircraft manufacturer Embraer announced they have received a record-breaking order of 55 aircraft from SAS, or Scandinavian Airlines. This marks another step to the airline’s fleet renewal and future growth plans. The highlight of the possibility to use 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the aircraft echoes with SAS’s development of more sustainable aviation.

Next Steps: Fleet Renewal, Sustainability and Improved Regional Connectivity

SAS’s record-breaking Embraer order of 55 aircraft is the largest direct order the airline has placed since 1996. The order consists of 45 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with purchasing rights of 10 more aircraft. The deal was valued at approximately £3.15 billion, with delivery dates starting in 2027.

Anko van der Werff, CEO and President of SAS, deemed this a ‘defining moment’ for the airline:

“The Embraer E195-E2 is a world-class aircraft, combining outstanding performance with excellent fuel efficiency and comfort. This aircraft is key to enabling future growth and improved connectivity across Scandinavia and beyond. We’ve taken the time to make the right decision — and this major investment reflects our confidence in the future and the strength of the agreement we’ve secured.”

The newly ordered aircraft are part of the strategy to enhance connectivity between the Scandinavian region and Europe. The E2 aircraft, with lower emissions, also allows the airline to abide by sustainability development and promote greener aviation.

Greener Aviation: Increasing SAF Usage

SAF, Sustainable Aviation Fuel, has been gaining increasing attention in recent years with rising environmental concerns. SAF, generally made from renewable or waste sources, could reduce carbon emissions of up to 80% compared to fossil fuels.

The Embraer E2 family has been tested with 100% SAF, whereas as of today, 50% blended SAF is completely achievable in flights. As technology and research progress, the aircraft could fly with 100% SAF, ensuring SAS’s contributions to sustainable development and greener aviation.

With advanced technology and engineering systems, the E195-E2 delivers huge reductions in fuel burn, emissions, and noise compared to previous-generation aircraft.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is the national carrier for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and bears the title of the world’s most punctual airline for two years in a row.
