An Introduction to Riyadh Air

In the modern world where the number of passengers flying has increased every year, Saudi Arabia has introduced its second flag carrier ‘Riyadh Air’ on 2023.

Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia announced the introduction of their second airline which is owned by their Public Investment Fund (PIF) under Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of PIF.

After a few months of the announcement, they unveiled their livery on June 2023 by renting a Boeing 787-9 fleet from Oman Air. After that, they then ordered 39 Boeing 787-9, 25 Airbus A350-1000 and 60 Airbus A321 neo aircraft.

In the month of June 2023, the airline also got its designator code ‘RX’ from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and granted the Passenger Air Transport Economic License by General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA). This license is the mandatory requirement for the airlines to begin commercial operations.

First flight to London

The airline has set King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as their home base. Tony Douglas, CEO of Riyadh Air announced that the airline’s first commercial flight is to fly from Riyadh to London’s Heathrow International airport.

They have also announced that the initial ticket sales will be for PIF and the airline employees.  The airline also confirmed that their second flight is to Dubai. Riyadh Air aims to fly their flights to 100 destinations by 2030.
