Manchester Airport Transformation Programme
It has been invested £1.3 Billion in the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, an initiative to expand and modernise one of the busiest airports in the United Kingdom with a new infrastructure, expansion and facilities for the travelers from all around the world. This Transformation Programme had a goal to make a brand new Manchester terminal 2, having in mind the design and expansion. Manchester Airport terminal 2 designed by the architectural firm Pascall+Watson opened in 2021 and its stylish transformation made millions of travelers enjoy from the range of modern facilities to drinks and food outstanding outlets.
Manchester Airport’s terminal 2 recognised in Prix Versailles architecture award
Manchester airport’s terminal 2 was really awarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. For those who don’t know- Prix Versailles is an important International Architecture Award that judges the facilities design including innovation, creativity, ecological efficiency and cultural heritage with a combination of space functionality and also sustainability. Additionally, Prix Versailles is associated with UNESCO which adds a significant credibility to the award. The judges described the Manchester Airport’s terminal 2 design as “inspiring” and being “perfectly mastered.“
Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, Jérôme Gouadain says for Manchester Airport award “Today, Manchester Airport earns a place in the globally renowned list of the most aesthetically pleasing Airports. This recognition is attributed to the exceptional architectural accomplishments shown in Terminal 2 and acknowledged during the 2022 Prix Versailles.”
Chris Woodroofe,the managing director of Manchester Airport stated how proud he was to serve the people from the North of UK, by connecting them to the world via International level and network unrivalled by any UK airport outside London matching any major international capital city while Julian Carlson, Director at Pascall+Watson, expressed joy to contributing in this inspiring and innovative project with words
“We are delighted that Prix Versailles recognised the teamwork of Pascall+Watson and the MAG Team in creating Manchester Airport’s new Terminal 2, this project allowed us to give the airport a modern look while upgrading and expanding facilities for future use”
Most importantly is for us to notice that Terminal 2 not only intensifies the traveler experience but was also successfully completed while still keeping the airport fully operational.
Future Plans for Manchester’s Airport
Manchester Airport announced the future airport’s plans of Manchester’s Airport Transformation Programme phase 2 involving the continuing expansion of Terminal 2 to double of its current capacity.
Chris Woodroofe mentioned about it “We’re moving into phase two now and over an epic 18 months between now and 2025 we’ll see work finish on the project. By that time, around 80% of our passengers will go through Terminal 2 so while many may not have experienced it yet, the chances are you will do in future.”
Other Airport’s plans involve creation of more jobs, resulting in economic impact- it is expected to be generated more than 16.400 extra jobs by 2040 due to airport expansion.
In terms of terminal 2 facilities, is having in prospect to double the number of gates available for the air plane, the current work on new screening machines in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 to now allow for to increase security, on the way for the expected removal of restrictions on liquids in hand luggage. Furthermore, the recently check-in desks in new section of terminal 2 ensuring smoother and issues-free operations.
“And the most exciting thing is that we’re not even finished yet. More than 1 million working hours have gone into the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme so far but there’s much more to come” adds Chris Woodroofe for the public
