Jet Aviation announced the development of two new wide-body hangars in Basel. The combined structures of the two hangars will bring Jet Aviation’s total hangar capacity in Basel to 40,000 square meters, with some 18,000 square meters of production and shops.

Elie Zelouf, an aviation pioneer and longtime Jet Aviation executive, was honored as a European Living Legend of Aviation in 2024 for over 70 years of service to the business aviation industry.

Facility in Basel, Switzerland

The company’s largest facility is in Basel, Switzerland. Basel is its global headquarters with six hangars, amounting to a total of 36,000 square meters, 52,000 square meters of ramp space, and about 18,000 square meters of production and shops. The current hangars one and two will be rebuilt and extended to create two new wide-body hangars, totalling 16,000 square meters, with 5,500 square meters of shops.

Cyril Martiniere, vice president of maintenance operations in Europe and general manager of the Basel facility, stated that since 1967, Basel has been their first site and home to their largest maintenance, refurbishment, modification, and VIP completion centre. Martiniere noted the growth from one hangar to six hangars, and in the past decade, they have expanded the site by over 14,000 square meters.

Facility features

The new hangars feature a wooden arch, extensive natural lighting via skylights, geothermal and solar energy production, underfloor heating, an exterior construction for optimal insulation, and a large door that enables flexibility in aircraft movement.

The hangars are built on existing sustainability practices at the site, including a building energy management system that reduces energy consumption. Several other features have also been integrated to provide an efficient working environment, including GSE storage areas, tank ventilation systems, lifts for efficient flow of parts and raw materials, a flat floor for jacking and levelling, including aerial lifelines across the entire space.

Sylvain von Hof, vice president of supply chain management (SCM) and real estate, said that the new hangars will provide a working environment and enable the highest standards of safety and efficiency in service of a seamless employee experience. Hof stated the importance of the hangars as the next step in their ongoing infrastructure journey in Basel, thanking everyone who has provided support and growth in the region.
