The decision to rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in Florida has prompted the filing of a lawsuit from a pilot who has questioned the legality of such a move. Under the current legislation signed by the state’s Governor Ron DeSantis, the name of the airport will be changed to President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 1, 2026.

A controversial decision

The bill was signed into law by DeSantis on March 30, 2026, approving the decision to rename the Florida travel hub in honour of President Donald J. Trump, whose Mar-a-Lago estate is situated nearby. Once the renaming has taken place, the president’s name will appear on the airport, and the airport code will be updated to “DJT” to reflect the change.

This decision has been widely celebrated by members of the Republican Party, who have taken to social media to express their support.

The Representative for Florida state, Meg Weinberger, wrote on X:

“This historic recognition celebrates a President who made Florida his home and saved our great Nation. Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this moment possible as we honor President Trump’s legacy and his extraordinary contributions to America.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. president’s son also voiced his support for the bill on social media, stating:

“Proud to have played a small role in making this happen.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is now working to make the administrative changes necessary for the renaming process to take place seamlessly. This includes updating navigational charts and databases to avoid confusion or disruption to travel.

The legal backlash

However, not all responses to the renaming have been positive.

The Florida House Democratic Leader, Fentrice Driskell, has been vocal in her criticism towards the decision. In a statement shared to The Independent, she said:

“Life keeps getting more expensive for working families and seniors in Florida, which is why Democrats spent this legislative session fighting for an affordability agenda to lower costs and put more money back in your pocket. Instead of working across the aisle with us to advance those bills, Republicans leaders decided to prioritize wasting five million of your taxpayer dollars on renaming an airport after the President.”

A Florida pilot has also taken legal action against the name change. George Poncy Jr., who regularly flies from the airport, has filed a lawsuit to challenge the bill. Primarily, the lawsuit claims that since the airport is owned by Palm Beach County, the renaming law violates the county’s right to home rule.

The lawsuit also raises concerns over the estimated $5.5 million that the name change will cost to the taxpayer in Florida, and the potential for confusion among those who are not up-to-date with the correct information.

As of yet, the court has not yet made a ruling on whether the name change is legal and will be upheld.
