Aberdeen International Airport (ABZ) has been named a top winner at the Northern Star Business Awards 2026, highlighting its role as a key transport hub and economic driver in northeast Scotland. The awards, organised by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, recognise companies that contribute strongly to regional growth and innovation.

Recognition for Growth and Investment

The ceremony, held at P&J Live in April, brought together hundreds of business leaders, with Aberdeen Airport standing out among a competitive shortlist.

The airport’s success reflects steady growth and continued investment. It handles around 2.3 million passengers each year and supports roughly 3,400 jobs, contributing more than £110 million annually to the local economy.

Recent upgrades have focused on improving the passenger experience, including the introduction of next-generation security scanners and infrastructure improvements worth around £3.7 million. At the same time, new international routes are helping strengthen global connections from the region.

Russell Borthwick, chief executive of the chamber, said the awards highlight the strong mix of innovation, ambition and resilience across local businesses, which continues to drive the region forward.

Busy Travel Periods and New Opportunities

The award comes as the airport prepares for a busy travel season. Demand is expected to rise during peak periods with more passengers travelling to European destinations for short breaks.

New travel experiences are also being introduced in late 2026, including exclusive charter trips such as direct Lapland day packages, offering passengers more variety when flying from the airport.

For travellers, the recognition reflects ongoing improvements in facilities and services, alongside growing route options. As demand continues to increase, Aberdeen International Airport is positioning itself to handle more passengers while maintaining efficiency and reliability.
