European Cargo enters administration

The airline, which operated a fleet of Airbus A340 freighters from its base at Bournemouth Airport, has appointed administrators following financial difficulties.

European Cargo specialised in long-haul freight services, connecting the UK with destinations across Asia, China and the Americas. The carrier played a notable role during the post-pandemic air cargo boom, utilising converted Airbus A340 aircraft to transport e-commerce shipments, mail and general cargo.

The administration raises questions over the future of the airline’s fleet, employees and existing commercial agreements. Administrators are expected to assess the business and explore options including a potential sale, restructuring or asset disposal.

Further information regarding the impact on staff and customers is expected in the coming days.

About European Cargo

European Cargo was launched in 2022 and operated as a dedicated freight airline using converted Airbus A340-600 aircraft. The airline emerged from the wider European Aviation Group and established its headquarters and operational base at Bournemouth Airport.

The carrier focused primarily on long-haul cargo operations, serving routes between the UK and key freight markets in Asia and North America. Its Airbus A340 fleet, originally designed for passenger operations, was converted to carry freight, providing substantial cargo capacity at a time of strong demand within the air freight sector.

Despite initial growth opportunities following the COVID-19 pandemic, the air cargo market has faced increasing challenges in recent years, including falling freight yields, weaker global demand and rising operating costs. These pressures have affected cargo operators worldwide and have created a difficult trading environment for airlines reliant on long-haul freight operations.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
