This week, Etihad Airways celebrated another major milestone as its flagship Airbus A380 touched down in Singapore. Offering enhanced capacity, unmatched luxury and a new era of air travel connecting the UAE and Asia’s vibrant hub. The occasion marked the first time the national airline of the UAE has deployed its renowned double-decker aircraft on this increasingly popular Abu Dhabi-Singapore route. The landing of the aircraft represents an exciting time for this connection, reflecting strong growth and momentum in the ties between the two regions.

A Leap in Luxury

The “Big Bird’s” arrival at Singapore Changi Airport on 2 February, introduces Etihad’s iconic inflight offerings to Singapore or the very first time. At the heart of this luxurious experience is what Etihad calls: The Residence. Offering unparalleled comfort, this is the world’s only three-room suite available in the sky.

Sounding rather dystopian, The Residence comes fitted with a living room, private bedroom and an ensuite shower. If that was not enough, the upper deck of the A380 is home to The Lobby, an exclusive lounge space which can be used by First and Business Class passengers looking to relax and socialise mid-flight, and away from their seats.

This aircraft’s impressive and unique configuration also includes nine First Apartments, 70 Business Studios, and 405 Economy Smart seats. With all of that, Etihad’s “Big Bird” is able to seamlessly blend comfort and capacity, truly catering for all passengers.

Moreover, the move for this aircraft to deploy in Singapore boosts the route’s capacity by 28%, adding over 700 seats per week. This is simply a reaction to meet the growing demand for travel between UAE and Singapore.

Strategic Expansion

This decision by Etihad is a part of its broader strategy, aimed at strengthening the airline’s presence in Asia. Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, Arik De emphasised the significance of this development:

“As a vibrant and dynamic city, Singapore is always going to be a key destination in our global network. Deploying our much-loved A380 boosts our travel offering and highlights our resolve to go beyond by delivering fantastic travel experiences across Etihad’s growing global network”

The demand for travel both to and from Singapore is booming at the moment, driven  by the city’s growing status as a global hub of finance, appealing to both business and leisure customers. Therefore, Etihad’s increased capacity comes at the perfect time.

Furthermore, Singapore is one of the best connected airports in the world. With that in mind, the airline’s expanded services will not only enhance connectivity between the UAE and Singapore but also improve the airline’s links to key destinations across the globe.

Strengthening Ties

The move makes sense for many other reasons too. The UAE and Singapore already enjoy powerful bilateral relations across trade, culture and technology. The introduction of Etihad’s flagship A380 onto this route is yet another way of underscoring their commitment to support these ties. The new route caters to business and tourism, and with Singapore and the UAE actively expanding into both of those markets the route is set to get busier and busier in the foreseeable future.

Additionally, Etihad’s Abu Dhabi Stopover programme offers travellers the chance to extend their layovers with as many as two complimentary nights spent at premium hotels. This allows customers to turn a previously considered transit stop, into a memorable mini-break. This initiative shows one of the many appeals of flying with Etihad. Much like the expansion of the Singapore route, it is yet another one of their many efforts to showcase Abu Dhabi as a growing tourist hotspot.

With the debut of the “Big Bird” in Singapore, Etihad is doing more than just adding a few extra seats, it is raising the aviation bar, and elevating the travelling experience. Once again, it is Etihad Airways setting a new benchmark for luxury, comfort and connectivity.
