An easyJet flight departure from Liverpool to Fuerteventura was forced to return shortly after takeoff on Wednesday after the co-pilot fell ill during the ascent. The diversion adds to a recent series of incidents affecting the airline’s operations.

The Incident

Flight EZY96DZ, operated by an Airbus A320, departed from Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) at 7:30 a.m. local time and had been airborne for around 20 minutes when the crew alerted air traffic control of a medical emergency involving the co-pilot. His condition meant he could no longer carry out his duties safely, prompting the captain to request priority for an immediate return.

The aircraft landed safely without incident.

Medical teams were positioned on the ground ahead of the aircraft’s arrival and assessed the co-pilot upon landing. EasyJet has not yet provided information regarding passenger compensation or the co-pilot’s condition following the incident.

Recent Disruptions

Wednesday’s incident is the latest in a series of disruptions affecting easyJet services to and from Spain and the Canary Islands.

In July, a flight from Tenerife to Liverpool was forced to return after a fight involving around ten passengers broke out onboard. The incident prompted the captain to request police assistance upon landing.

In September, a flight from Bristol to Málaga declared an emergency on approach after smoke was detected in the cabin. The flight crew used oxygen masks during the approach before landing the aircraft safely.
