Easyjet have been under fire for falsely advertising that passengers could add an additional cabin bag for £5.99 on most of it’s scheduled flights, despite this offer only being offered on a small number of its routes.

How was it discovered?

In a survey conducted by Which?, figures showed that the offer that Easyjet was marketing- that passengers could book a large cabin bag ‘from £5.99’ was not offered on enough flights or widespread across their services for the offer to be advertised as a main campaign. Prices have been varied across different routes, times, airports, depending on demand and availability on select flights.

In the investigation, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) analysed 520 different flights from different Easyjet hubs around the country, including Manchester and Gatwick and ultimately found that the average lowest cost for a large cabin bag was £23 but many Easyjet customers were paying upwards of £30.

How did Easyjet respond to the survey?

The airline responded to the findings with underlining that they act with the ‘upmost transparency’ and clearly state the price of cabin bags on the flight before booking.

Easyjet‘s booking page now states: ‘Fees vary with demand, route, flight date and time of booking. You’ll see exact price at time of purchase.’

Other no-frills airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz have also been called out for misleading customers with extra baggage fees, after the ASA have also called to look at the range of prices offered on these carriers.
