The first test flight has been successfully completed at the Zangilan International Airport in East Zangezur, Azerbaijan – one of the two economic regions in the liberated lands of Azerbaijan. The airport is currently under construction.

Further details

The Zangilan International Airport is currently under construction and all work is currently expected to be completed by the end of this year. The news of the successful test flight from Azerbaijan’s latest airport came from Nasimi Aghayev, the Consul General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles, on Wednesday.

The runway of the Zangilan International Airport will be a total of 3060m runway in length and 60 meters in width. It will have the capability to receive all types of aircraft – including heavy cargo planes that weigh up to 400 tonnes.

Once operational, the new airport is expected to contribute to the socio-economic development of East Zangezur and the surrounding areas that have recently been liberated from nearly three decades of Armenian occupation.

The first new airport in liberated Azerbaijani lands, the Fuzuli International Airport in Fuzuli started operating in October 2021. Built by both Azerbaijani and Turkish companies, the international airport was built on an airdrome that had been abandoned for almost 30 years and was surrounded by former minefields.

In 2024, the third airport that will be based in liberated Azerbaijani lands will be fully operational. The land where the third airport will be located is currently being levelled for construction and will be the highest-altitude airport in the country.

Azerbaijan has a total of seven international airports, with the most popular being Baku International Airport, typically known as Heydar Aliyev International Airport, which also serves as a hub for the country’s flag carrier.
