The head of the Allied Pilots Association has pointed to a proposed merger idea from United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby as an example of the type of long-term strategy needed at American Airlines. In a message to union members, APA president Nick Silva said the proposal demonstrated “bold vision”, although the union did not formally support a merger between the two airlines.

Union highlights strategic concerns at American Airlines
The comments follow reports that United had explored a potential tie-up with American, but ended discussions after the airline declined to engage. American has stated that such a merger would raise competition concerns.
In his message, Silva referenced the proposal as part of a broader argument that American Airlines needs a clearer long-term strategy. He encouraged pilots to review the idea, suggesting it illustrated a more ambitious approach to industry challenges.
American has faced ongoing pressure from labour groups over its financial performance relative to competitors such as Delta Air Lines and United. Earlier this year, the pilots’ union called for stronger leadership, while the airline’s flight attendants’ union issued a vote of no confidence in CEO Robert Isom.

Merger proposal faces regulatory and political barriers
According to earlier reports, the proposed merger concept emerged during a meeting involving Scott Kirby and President Donald Trump. The idea would likely face significant regulatory scrutiny due to overlapping routes and market share concerns.
U.S. regulators have historically taken a cautious approach to airline consolidation, particularly in cases involving major carriers with extensive domestic networks.
While the merger proposal is no longer being pursued, Silva indicated that alternative strategic options for American Airlines may still be under discussion. He also suggested that external parties had approached the union regarding potential future directions for the airline, without providing further details.
