What happened?

Around 9:30 am on Monday, an employee was performing their duties when the incident occurred. The American Airlines worker was fatally struck by an airline ramp vehicle at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. The emergency medical responders were able to swiftly arrive at the scene; however, upon arrival, they were unable to save the victim, pronouncing them dead at the scene.

As of today, the exact circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. The Austin Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Unit is currently treating the incident as an accidental death.

The tragic accident has left the airport community in mourning for a colleague while revealing the dangerous duties ramp workers are responsible for. The airline commented on the situation, expressing their condolences.

“We are devastated by the accident involving a team member at Charlotte International Airport (CLT). Our thoughts are prayers with the family and our local team members.

How common are these situations?

This incident is shocking, highlighting the danger groundwork at an airport can pose. An accident happening when surrounded by massive machinery and aircraft can lead to horrifying consequences. Ramp accidents are more common than people might think. The Flight Safety Foundation estimates that 27,000 ramp accidents and incidents occur worldwide every year.

Accidents are common on airport grounds, especially for the workers. This is because their tasks usually involve loading and unloading baggage, refuelling planes, and guiding aircraft on the tarmac. It is unfortunate that such important workers, whose duties involve such risks, do not have the proper safety regulations in place. It is important for the aviation industry to keep evolving and adding new measures to protect the workers on the ground to avoid such tragic accidents.

What do you think about safety regulations for airport ground workers?
