Alaska Airlines will join American Airlines’ Atlantic and Pacific Joint Businesses, where the carriers plan to file for approval and antitrust immunity with the U.S. Transportation Department. Alaska Air Group plans to double the size of its cargo business and sees a “clear path” to generate $750 million in annual cargo revenue by 2030.

Alaska’s Involvement in the Joint Businesses

Alaska’s entry into the joint businesses was first reported in Apr. 2026, when it would join the Atlantic Joint Business alongside American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, LEVEL, and the Pacific Joint Business alongside Japan Airlines. Following its increase in flight network frequency, Alaska Airlines (AS) continues to grow its interconnected aviation system by working with the Atlantic Businesses.

Cargo revenue has already grown by around 60% since 2024, but Alaska wants to increase its broader network connectivity, as supported by opportunities for Hawaii’s freighter operations.

Participation in the joint businesses would allow Alaska to coordinate schedules and share revenue on covered international routes. The carrier plans to do this through its Alaska Accelerate programme. Alaska Air Group is also seeking to increase the share of revenue generated outside the main cabin. Through premium products, loyalty, cargo, and international flying, the group aims to more than double the size of its cargo business.

B737 MAX Narrowbody

Alaska is investing in premium-economy cabins across the fleet as part of the Alaska Accelerate programme. The new premium B737 MAX narrowbody will be introduced with a “premium reserve” cabin in 2028. The product will debut on Alaska’s B78709s, B787-10s, and selected B737-10s, and will also be installed on Hawaiian Airlines’ A330-200 fleet.

The updated B787-9 configuration will feature around 46% premium seating, up from the current figure of 38%. At least twenty-five B737-10s will feature twelve lie-flat suites and  twelve premium reserve seats. In 2028, Hawaiian’s fleet of twenty-four A330s will begin receiving new interiors.

Alaska Air Group is targeting diversified revenue, including international premium, loyalty, and cargo, of close to 60% of total revenue by 2030, up from 53% currently.
