British Airways announced plans to launch two new destination routes in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar from London. The service will begin its stretch at London Gatwick Airport (LGW), flying to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and then proceed to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), before returning to London.
Flight Information
Flights are scheduled three times a week from May. 29, 2027 to Oct. 31, 2027, to coincide with the UK school holidays and the peak safari season. The routes will function as a triangular routing from LGW-JRO-ZNZ and will be flown in a Boeing 777, flight number BA2163. The outbound flights will operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while the return flights ZNZ-LGW are scheduled to operate on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Prices start from 849 pounds return, including taxes and hand luggage.
These routes mark the first time in over a decade that British Airways’ have operated in Tanzania. The Chief Planning and Strategy Officer of British Airways, Neil Chernoff expressed the company’s excitement and intent surrounding the new service:
“We’re excited to be launching flights to two exceptional new destinations that showcase the very best of Tanzania. From the vast plains of the Serengeti and the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to the turquoise waters and white-sand beaches of Zanzibar, these new routes strengthen our footprint in East Africa and open the door to some of the world’s most extraordinary travel experiences.”
The Destinations
The Kilimanjaro region is located within the heart of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain peak in Africa spanning five climate zones. The area is home to natural wonders including the Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Zanzibar is famous for its sandy beaches and vast marine life. Stone Town, a UNESCO-listed area in Zanzibar, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, which includes the spice history of the city, and historical landmarks such as St. Joseph’s Cathedral.
