Airbus has secured eight new orders for its soon-to-launch A350 freighter from an unnamed customer, bringing the total number of orders for the aircraft to 115 from at least 14 customers. The deal comes as the airframer prepares to begin flight testing the model later this year.
Order Secured Ahead of Test Flight Campaign
The order for the eight freighters was secured on Aug. 31 and listed on Airbus’s orders and deliveries report for the month. Industry sources indicate the first flight of the aircraft could take place around Sept. 24, though technical issues or weather could push the date into October.
In response to questions from Air Cargo News, Airbus said:
“The maiden flight is expected later in 2026, followed by the first delivery in the second half of 2027.”
Airbus is targeting simultaneous certification from EASA and the FAA under the latest Amendment 27 safety regulations, giving it roughly 14 months to certify the aircraft before deliveries begin.
Competition With Boeing Intensifies
The order follows a string of recent A350F commitments, including Cathay Cargo’s expansion of its order to eight aircraft in May, Air China Cargo’s purchase agreement for four additional aircraft, and Atlas Air’s March order for 20 aircraft, with options for 20 more.
Airbus’s growing order book comes as Boeing also secures interest in its rival 777-8 freighter, with Afcom Holdings signing a letter of intent for up to four of the aircraft and Ethiopian Airlines reportedly considering an order for up to 10 Boeing freighters. Boeing has so far secured 81 confirmed orders for the 777-8F.
