Discover Airlines, which is part of the Lufthansa group, announced a series of weekly services to two new destinations in Finland. Flights from Discover’s operating base at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) will fly to Savonlinna Airport (SVL) between June and August 2027, and to Kajaani Airport (KAJ) between December 2027 and March 2028. This will be the first time an international route has used SVL.

The New Routes
Flights between FRA and SVL will run every Saturday evening between June 19, 2027, and Aug. 29, 2027. This ensures travellers arrive during Finland’s “white nights”, when the sun sets very late in the evening, or not at all.
The FRA to KAJ route will fly on Fridays between Dec. 17, 2027, and March 24, 2028.
Both routes will utilise Discover Airlines’ fleet of 18 Airbus A320-200 jets.
The chief commercial officer of Discover Airlines, Marco Götz, said during the announcement of the new routes:
“Travel to the Nordic countries remains very popular – as evidenced by rising booking numbers. With Savonlinna and Kajaani, we’re expanding our offerings to include two special destinations that allow travellers to experience different facets of Finland.”
The newly announced routes will add to Discover’s current programme of seasonal flights to Kittilä Airport (KTT) in Lapland, Finland.

Travel to Finland
The new service will be the first international route to use SVL. The airport is currently served by a Budapest Aircraft Service (BASe) route to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL). BASe operates several flights per day to Finland’s capital, using Embraer E120 aircraft.
KAJ also offers regular flights to HEL, where fliers can travel onwards to international destinations.
In addition, the airport is also a destination for seasonal TUI Airways flights from Manchester Airport (MAN) and TUI flights from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS).
Despite these existing connections, the new routes are hoped to improve international tourists’ access to Finland’s seasonal attractions.
Director of International Operations at Visit Finland, Teemu Ahola, said:
“Discover Airlines’ new flight connection from Frankfurt to Savonlinna, launching next summer, will strengthen the accessibility of eastern Finland and create new opportunities for the growth of tourism in the Savonlinna and Lake Saimaa region in international markets,” adding that the company is “very pleased about the opening of the route and will continue to work actively together with our partners to support its success.”
Ahola was also optimistic the route would be used again after its initial 11-week run.
