Emirates Engineering has launched a new initiative that challenges university students to transform retired aircraft materials into innovative new products, combining sustainability with hands-on industry experience.
Students tackle real world challenges
The Material Futures Studio is a six week programme led by the airline’s up-cycling department, bringing students together with aviation professionals to develop practical solutions for reusing materials recovered from aircraft.
The first edition of the programme welcomed 23 students from Khalifa University, Emirates Aviation University and the University of Sharjah. This year, over the course of six weeks, students will meet senior leaders, work alongside mentors and present their ideas and prototypes at a final showcase.
According to a statement released by Emirates:
“Material Future Studio brings students together with aviation professionals to help work on read world industry challenges, encouraging fresh thinking whilst helping develop the next generation of aviation talent.”
Building on sustainability efforts
The programme forms part of Emirates’ wider commitment to reducing waste through its in-house up-cycling projects. The airline is currently investing billions of dollars to refurbish 219 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft, using materials repurposed into products. Among these initiatives is the ‘Aircraft by Emirates’ collection, which features luggage, bags and accessories made from reclaimed aircraft materials. The airline has also introduced a scheme for children, turning recovered fabrics into handmade backpacks to be donated to children around the world.
By combining academic learning with practical industry experience, Emirates said the studio will equip students with valuable engineering skills as well as inspire innovative ways of giving aircraft materials a second life.
