A large fire near Palma Airport in Mallorca (PMI) prompted authorities to place the airport on pre-alert after thick smoke and reported explosions raised concerns close to the runway. Despite the incident, airport operations continued as normal with no disruption to flights reported.

Fire breaks out close to the airport

The blaze started on Monday afternoon, July 6, at the Mercapalma food distribution complex, where it is believed to have begun in a lorry before spreading to nearby vehicles, including at least one trailer. Witnesses also reported hearing several explosions as the fire intensified.

A thick column of smoke was visible across several parts of the island, including nearby coastal areas, prompting airport authorities to issue a pre-alert due to the fire’s proximity to the runways.

Flights continue despite smoke

Although aircraft operations were closely monitored, there was no confirmed impact on flights arriving at or departing from PMI. Aircraft continued using the airport while emergency services worked to contain the fire. The airport remained operational throughout the incident, avoiding disruption during one of the busiest periods of the summer travel season.

Authorities urged residents in the nearby Son Banya area to remain indoors as smoke spread across the surrounding neighbourhoods. While the fire is believed to have originated in a lorry, investigations into the incident are ongoing.
