On May 27, 2026, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, officially opened the latest domestic airport in the country, the Negele Borana Airport (EGL). The airport is located in the Oroima region.

The opening of the airport was announced via social media, Ahmed expressed his satisfaction. On the announcement post, the Prime Minister wrote:
“every new runway we build bridges a gap, unlocks regional economic potential, and brings our people closer together.”
The airport is capable of supporting modern and large aircraft, including a B737 MAX. The prime minister disclosed, in the same social media post, that the airport’s operations will begin immediately, serving three time weekly flights.
Within the many benefits the airport brings to the region, domestic connectivity is one of them. The airport was build in order to promote local tourism, stimulate the commerce and cross-border trade. These factors increase the links, social or economic, between several cities within the country.
Airport’s Importance to Ethiopian Airlines
Ethiopian Airlines will also benefit from the inauguration of the airport, as this will mark the 24th domestic destination served by the airline. Even though the carrier’s domestic connectivity is extensive, the addition of the Negele Borana Airport improves its network.
Besides the recent inauguration, other two airports were opened earlier this year: Gore Metu Airport (GOR) and Debre Markos Airport (DBM). The airline already operates in both Metu and Markos, and is waiting for the commencement of passenger carrying activities at Negele Borana.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mesfin Tasew, demonstrated his satisfaction with the airport openings:
“This expansion reflects our steadfast commitment to enhancing connectivity within Ethiopia and serves as a powerful driver of economic growth and regional development.”
Overall, the new additions to Ethiopia’s aviation industry show great promise to the country and for future aviation.
